The Humane Society of the United States presented their 25th Genesis Awards last week at which they honor members of the media who create film, television and programing which elevates or helps saves animals or brings attention to issues we can help with.  Here Ryan O'Neal and I are on the Red Carpet talking about the awesomeness of dog adoption.  Smiley is my giant adopted mutt, and Ryan just adopted a dog from Best Friends that I brought to him.   Thank you Humane Society US and Best Friends for all you do for animals.   At Genesis, Oprah won for her shows about dolphins in captivity and about puppy mills. Animal Planet's Victoria Stilwell, Shorty Rossi, Betty White and Sex in the City's Kristen Bell among many others were honored. I always felt so isolated in my empathy for animals, and after my first Genesis Awards, I met an entire community who dedicates their lives to speaking for these wonderful creatures.  Very reinforcing and inspiring.   www.HumaneSociety.org   and www.BestFriends.org  for more information.   And visit Smiley and me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MeganBlake  :)  Have a Super Smiley day!

Tout Suite The Travel Kitty flew to NY to share travel tips on Better TV.  The show is syndicated across the US and airs this Friday so set your Tivo to Tout!  His favorite tip:  Allow your pet to discover his travel bag as his "safe" place so he will feel secure as he travels.  Pawsome!

Tout likes his bag so much he decided to take in the sights in Central Park...

And Hang with Mary Poppins star, Adam Fiorentino - another world traveler

While Tout took in the sights, he had specatators of his own.   Woof!   No problem.  Tout has 2 big dogs at home and he was in his "safe" place.   Do your cats or dogs have any travel tips or stories....  Fun star sightings are good too!

America's Next Top Model, NIgel Barker, says he will take Canada's Prime Minister on a personal tour of the Seal Nurseries if he calls off the seal hunt.  Sounds great to me!  No one buys fur any more and think of all the tourism money Canada could make giving tours to see the cutest babies on earth.  The Humane Society of the US has thought of some more things we can tell him we will do if he calls off the hunt.  How about buying a lifetime supply of Maple Syrup?  Or buying Canadian seafood?  Or taking a cruise to Vancouver?  If you want to tell the Prime Minister that you oppose the hunt and will do something good for Canada if he stops the madness you can do it at http://www.humanesociety.org/seriouslycanada/  It takes a minute or less.  And let us know what ideas you have or what you would do to show Canada we are positive and creative and just want to allow the baby seals to be safe in their nurseries.

Who could say no to him????

Imagine being in a beautiful ballroom with the most dedicated and fearless warriors for animals, and that is what it is like to be at the Genesis Awards, presented by the Humane Society of the US.  The Genesis Awards honors media (film, TV, print) that brings animal issues to light.  The Cove won for best documentary.  If you haven't heard about it, these are the (now Academy Award wining) undercover investigators who in Japan risked their lives for shining light on the dolphin trapping and slaughter in Japan's "Cove." www.TheCoveMovie.com

This is Louis Psihoyos, the Film Director and man who led the team.  If you have not seen The Cove, it is a must!!!  Other winners include the animated feature, Up, which also won an Academy Award, Bones for TV series and A Dog Named Christmas for TV movie. Here's beautiful Emily DesChanel, Star of Bones.  She is a fabulous animal advocate and each season, encourages her producers to write an episode that highlights animal stewardship.

And, Animal Attractions TV and Dog's LIfe Magazine have both gotten Honorary Mentions at the Awards!  The first time I went to Genesis, I realized how many people are out there fighting and risking their lives for animals.  Before that, I often would be overwhelmed with the amount help animals need.  The Genesis Awards brings hope and inspiration by highlighting such great warriors for animals.  AND  Wayne Pacelle, CEO of HSUS, is making himself available on a conference call tonight!  The call will happen between 8 and 8:30 PM tonight EST.  Sign up with HSUS at www.hsus.org and make sure to have your phone listed and you will get the call and many will have the opportunity to ask Wayne questions directly!  Wow.  Power in joining forces for animals!!!!  We all are not a Louis Psihoyos, but we can do what we can.  Tell us about your rescue pets, or adventures in stewarding animals - And if you get to talk with Wayne......

I flew to New York to go to the Angel on a Leash and the Westminster Dog Show Activities, but before getting on the Red Eye in LA, Smiley stopped by the Red Carpet with me for the opening of the Animal Wellness Center in Santa Monica operated by wonderful Dr. Annie.  Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society US was there and spoke at the event.  It was very impresive, and Smiley was a hit and gave me a Red Carpet send off. But you know what, all our pets give us Red Carpet send offs and Welcomes!  Did your companion do something special for you when you got home today?

In NY, the pre-Westminster party was hosted by Pet a Potty, and Hudson and Murphey were there with their steward, Luke Robinson.  The trio are walking across the US to bring awareness to canine cancer.  They have walked over 1800 miles and the goal is 2000 in one year.  They invited me to walk a week with them!!!  I am soooooo excited.  It will happen in April!  Learn more about them at http://www.2dogs2000miles.org/  and you can join their 2 million mile walk by signing up and walking 2 miles. Angel and Smiley are walking.  Let us know if you do..

Uno. former Best in Show winner and David Frei, the President of Angels on a Leash therapy dogs and Director of Communications for the Westminster Show who is the voice and announcer we see during the television broadcast.  He is the kindest, dearest man.  He says his therapy dogs are angels.  That is true but he is their guardian angel.  You know, all our dogs are therapy dogs.  We come home and they help us relax and smile.  And we know they are angels with fur.

Former Best In Show winner Rufus!  Loved him!!!   Too bad he wouldn't fit in my purse, he would have been on the way to Malibu!  Shhhhhhh, don't tell Smiley!  There is just something special about dogs that makes you want to get on the floor and kiss them, even if you are wearing a black sequined cocktail dress.  You know what I mean?

The guys from Rescue Ink on National Geographic were at the kick off party for The Westminster Dog Show and The Angel on a Leash festivities in New York City.  And THEY ROCK!  They put their hearts and souls (and a lot of muscle) into rescuing and defending animals.  Smiley and I are huge fans, and 8 is truly my lucky number because we were all seated together at table number 8!  Rescue Ink rescues all types of animals, not just dogs and cats.  They recently rescued adult and newborn horses from the track!  You can learn more about these warriors for animals at www.rescueink.org .  Thank you Brandon of Pet a Potty for putting us together and for sponsoring this awesome event!!!!  If you haven't seen Rescue Ink, you have to check it out, and if you need a place for your dog to "go" then check out Pet a Potty too at www.Petapotty.com    I had a blast in NY with the dogs!!!!  Our site here was being updated so I missed posting a few days, but we are back and Super Smiling!
